A study published by the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes Of Health surveyed 152 orthopaedic surgeons. It defined successful orthopaedic surgeons as “individuals who exert a large influence on the orthopedic field.”
A few interesting findings:
What motivates a highly successful orthopaedic surgeon? A desire for new challenges.
How many hours do surgeons work? On average, 70.3 hours per week, it ranged from 50 to 110 hours per week. 59.9% of orthopaedic surgeons reported spending less than 10 waking hours with their loved ones Monday through Friday. About 20.0% of surgeons reported that they seldom eat dinner with their spouses and children in a typical week but 19.2% reported doing so almost every night.
Highly successful physicians make working on their own personal fitness a focus of their weekly schedule. More than half (58.3%) of surgeons reported exercising at least 3 times a week, 26.9% of those same surgeons reported that exercising 5 or more times per week.
